04/04/08 Ultimate Toy Test

With the holidays coming and children already asking for toys, many parents are wondering which ones to buy, which ones will their children enjoy and which ones are the bargains.

To help you answer the questions, we joined with our Scripps sister stations across the country to put some toys to the test. Fill rooms with children and toys, add cameras, have the parents join in and you have a test of some of the toys that will be aimed at youngsters and their parents this holiday season.

That's what we did along with our sister Scripps stations across the country. Eight toy makers - Hasbro, Leap Frog, Fisher Price, Lego, Mattel and Blip Toys - participated by sending us toys for different age groups. Each station set the toys up in a room and invited children and their parents to participate. after the test was complete the parents evaluation forms were analyzed and the top three toys in each age group selected. So which toys caught their attention and kept it?

For those eight years old and up, Monopoly is the top choice. Hasbro's updated Monopoly Here and Now gives a nod to today's lifestyle;when the children land on a property they pay with a credit card. It sells for $34.99. Coming in second is Blip Blip's Zero G; it combines science with hand-eye coordination and sells for $9.99. Tied for third is Hasbro's I-Dog Dance and Leapfrog's Didj custom gaming system. I-Dog sells for $39.99 and Didj lists for $89.99. This computer won top prize in our test in the 5 to 7 age group. When we did our survey of youngsters in this age group we went to the ABC Montessori School in Jupiter Farms. It was in this age group we found a noticeable gender difference in toys. It didn't take long in the testing to find the boys gravitated to the mechanical toys while the girls tended to gravitate to the computer. Selling for $59.99 the Fisher Price Computer School is the most popular in this age group. "I think she' learning how to read and she's learning to recognize her letters and learning how to do that on a computer is helpful," said the mother of one child. Coming in second is Jasbro's Bullseye Baseball; it's a big hit, especially for the boys. It sells for $19.99, but we heard this about it in our nationwide test. "He enjoyed playing with the baseball game but as a parent it's loud in fact it's still a little loud," said one parent. There was a tie for third with a split between boys and girls. For the girls, it's Fisher Price's Color Me Gemz set that sells for $19.99. For the boys, it's Hasbro's Nerf Peyton Manning Rocket Pass selling for $14.99. Fisher Price's toys are the winners for the two to four year olds; coming in first, Elmo's Restaurant and at $103 it's one of the most expensive in our test. Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Railway is second in popularity and sells for $54.99, and in third is Little People Learn About Town," selling for $44.99. Now you may have noticed something that came to our attention in our test;the most expensive toys on avereage are those for the children in the 2 to 4 year old category.
